Sign says "voted best in the USA," but I say meh. Ice cream was decent, but definitely nothing special.

The range of flavors available here makes it one of my favorite stops in MB. Our service was quick and friendly and my Heath bar crunch hot fudge sundae was scrumptious!!

I concur with the other reviews here: overpriced and nothing special. Painter's has been around for decades, and I think the place trades on nostalgia more than anything else. The building itself is timeworn and not well-kept. (It seems the only well-kept thing on the premises is the large sign proclaiming "Voted Best in the USA!") Three of us had cones of ice cream, and the total came to nearly $12 (about the same price as Coldstone Creamery, which has the overhead of nice stores and franchise fees). Two of the cones were decent, but one of the cones didn't taste very fresh. Skip the trip down memory lane and try another place for ice cream!

This is my warning to you, if you care about food enough to look at yelp before you eat something, do not be fooled by these "homemade" and "voted best" signs. Bleh. Yuck. I'm really regretting eating that strange artificial tasting ice cream cone. I really wish I'd gone to CVS and picked up a pint of Haagen Daz instead. The Tanger outlet has a Ben and Jerrys that's probably a lot better. Good ice cream is practically impossible to find around here... strangely, for a beach resort!

Based on the pictures on the windows this place used to be first class, but those days appear to be long gone. We were told that this was the best place in Myrtle Beach to get ice cream, and the sign seemed to support this, so we thought our experience might have been a fluke. However, a quick look at the Google reviews showed how far this place has fallen from its glory days. Upon arrival, my family members were the only customers in line when ordering, but Painters refused to provide a sample to my wife. The man taking the order said that he does not give samples during the "busy" time (after 7). I can understand the policy if there was a huge line, but my family of 5 were the only people in line and my wife was the LAST to order. Painters said there was no need to sample because they were voted the best ice cream in America. VERY ARROGANT. After we paid over 7 dollars for 2 single scoop cones (we did not take them up on their offer to upgrade to the pointy cone for 10 cents) we were informed that we would incur a 25 cent surcharge if we used a MasterCard. Isn't that against the MasterCard merchant agreement - boston.com/business/arti… When our cones were ready they were served to us by a lady who would only yell the flavor, or an abbreviation of the flavor, out of the window. She would not look at the customers, made customers reach into the window to retrieve their ice cream, and would slam the window as soon as each customer withdrew their ice cream from the window. She would not even give customers a napkin unless the customer knocked on the window multiple times to get her attention and then asked for a napkin. When we received our ice cream, it was bland and tasted worse than ice cream out of the carton. I ordered strawberry and there were 2 little strawberry slivers in the one scoop. My wife noted that the ice cream seemed to have an unusually large amount of air, which is the equivalent of watering down fruit juice. With so many ice cream shops in Myrtle Beach, this place is not worth your time!

Was in the area and craving ice cream so we stopped by. This is a traditional roadside ice cream shack, complete with limited seating, basic service, and decent ice cream. Service is very basic, order at the counter and wait for your order. Good selection of flavors, including malts and shakes. Ice cream had that traditional, rich taste that indicates it is not from a commercial plant. Only issue is price - at $3.95 for a single scoop, the product should be exceptional and it isn't . It's good (not great) and pricing should reflect it.

Pecan praline! Yum-mmy! Some of the best ice-cream I've ever eaten. Hubby said his hot fudge was good as well as my daughters choc chip. We'll be back!!

  • Jason S.

I remember this ice cream being much better years ago than it is now. Not that it's bad because it isn't, it's still pretty good. Just, it certainly isn't the best in the county and isn't worth the $5 price tag for a single scoop. Also, this place is crazy crowded at night. If you are stopping in for some ice cream though, oreo is a solid choice.

We just stopped by for ice cream with 3 kids after a long hot day of baseball. I love homemade ice cream & this did not disappoint. But as my son said when we were back in the car, didn't need his 'tude with our ice cream.

Painter's is a fixture in North Myrtle Beach. I have been coming here since the 1980's, when parking was a nightmare because it was a small gravel lot. It is now paved and a lot bigger. Parking still can be a problem because Painter's is popular and often busy, especially at night. The ice cream is homemade and delicious. The prices are in line with other ice cream shops. For those complaining about price, go buy a gallon of mass produced ice cream and sit on your couch watching The Biggest Loser. If you are looking for a nice way to end a night at the beach, I highly recommend Painter's.

  • Katie H.

Super delicious home made ice cream. Extremely friendly owner and very clean shop. Not sure why there are any negative reviews! You have to enjoy some Painters!!!

  • Dave P.

I'm sorry, Painter's, but I'm only scooping out two stars. But, I promise I will drop by once per year for nostalgic reasons (my mom and dad brought me here when I was a kid - and I will bring my family when we are in town). But the reality is your selection is limited, the facility needs a little TLC, but most importantly, the ice cream is simply not the best out there. For those who read this post and still chose to stop by Painter's; try the Banana Pudding Ice Cream. It is good.

  • Jeff C.

Why would anyone go to an ice cream place and order vanilla ice cream? If you want vanilla go to McDonalds. As for the autographs, I agree they're pretty lame. Honestly you could bring in an 8 x 10 of yourself and tell them you're a celebrity and they'd put it up. I thought the ice cream was decent, not great. My wife and I had the banana pudding ice cream. She said it was excellent. I liked it but I think I'll try the maple nut next time. Everyone was right about the price. It's not cheap! However, the fact that the place was expensive and still busy should tell you something - either it's good or there are no other choices.

    (3)
  • Chris M.

A tad overpriced, but decent assortment of flavors. Sign says voted best ice cream in the US?????????

    (2)
  • Allison H.

Painter's... I'm pretty sure the only thing this place has updated since the late '80's is the paint on the sign that says "Voted Best in the USA", which I hardly find believable anymore. I'd take Edy's in favor any day, and it's expensive! They don't have that much to choose from, either. I did enjoy looking at all the "autographed" celebrity photos, although I'm inclined to believe that at least half of them were forgeries.

  • Keelan P.

Wasn't too impressed with the ice cream here and the prices were kind of high. A complete lack of public restrooms was a little disconcerting as well. There has to be better ice cream places in the area. Still searching....

  • Jeff T.

$8.00 for two small cones of vanilla. I could buy two pints in a grocery store. They say the are voted number one. I would like to know how many people voted??? I am guessing one the owner. They were packed and the girl who took our order had a huge attitude. There was nothing special about their "homemade" ice cream!! Don't waste your money. Take the kids to Bi-Lo and buy a quart of ice cream and cones and save a ton and get more. Stay away!!!

Have been stopping at Painter's for years. Something has changed here. Ownership? Lady at front window is rude and seemed to not be real happy to be there. Maybe it's time to remove Painter's from my favorites. There are several other ice cream shops at the beach so I will not be coming back. Attitude change needed here.

Things ain't what they used to be. We used to go here every summer in the 1980's and there was no better ice cream in Myrtle Beach. The building and grounds remain the same and there is almost no seating. The ice cream has become largely average and there are few options in terms of fat free or dairy free. Lastly, some of the older workers were surly and acted like serving us average, over priced ice cream was a true hassle for them.

  • Reagan K.

This place is enjoyable. Has an old-timey feel to it with groups of people eating their treat on the patio. Great unique flavor a beyond just the classics. For as busy as they get, they move the line quickly while still being attentive to every customer. If there is one "negative," it would be the lack of parking, but off a major highway it's expected with a small lot.

I was really hoping to taste some good homemade ice cream from this location, but It was just the opposite. We pulled up at this location and no one waiting behind us or in front of us. I asked the lady working could I sample the ice cream and the kind I sampled wasn't that great. She seemed kind of impatient with me while I was looking over the menu trying to figure out what I wanted (even though no one was waiting). When another couple came behind me, I asked for a sundae and a cup of ice water. The lady proceeded to go off and say, "Where would I get you a cup of ice? Do you see an ice machine???" I am not sure how I would see an ice maker on the counter and sometimes ice makers sit on the ground, and it was 100 degrees that day, so I assumed at an ice cream shop you may have water or an ice maker. I am not sure but the comment was not necessary and she could have instead offered to sell me a bottle of water but didn't. Anyway, my sundae was just ok- nothing special and it tasted like I could have bought the ingredients at the store.

Just went there on a Wednesday night. The place was packed! People standing around everywhere...to my amazement, we were served in about five minutes. The ice cream was delicious! Worth a stop!

  • kaitlyn a.

Watery ice cream that tastes freezer burned.. Extremely expensive. Actually, insultingly expensive. $6 for a double cookie dough in a waffle cone. Service gets the stars, it was quick.

    (2)
  • Bobbie U.

When we first started coming here 7 years ago the hand made sign said "best ice cream in U.S. " and my family agrees. We make sure we stop here every year. I always get the Heath bar crunch, my favorite. Would highly recommend.

We needed an ice cream fix tonight and this place is ALWAYS busy, so it must be good, right? Yep, it is. We pulled off the highway to join the masses in ordering our sweet evening treat. I got my chocolate peanut butter cone (my favorite) while the family enjoyed fudge ripple and good ol' chocolate. Dominic, the owner, was super friendly taking our order - using his southern charm to make our visit memorable. The ice cream was very good. Best ever? Probably not, but the old-fashioned walk-up windows, the friendly staff, and the refreshing treat made it a great stop - one that we'll make again (and again...). Yeah, it's "expensive", but they all are on the Grand Strand.

  • Wally B.

Have been going to Painters for many years. However, something is different about the ice cream now and not for the better. On top of that, the staff was just rude the past two times we went. Time to look for a new ice cream shop.

    (2)
  • Erin E.

Tradition brings us back but the service makes it difficult to want to keep it on our list. No one that works here seems the least bit happy to be doing so. When they call your number, you'd better respond in 1.3 seconds or they will be hollering it out in a most irritated voice for the next 45 seconds straight. The ice cream isn't anything special (except the price). Step it up, Painter's!

    (1)
  • Teresa V.

Stopped by while in Myrtle Beach. Hubby said his milkshake was not mixed well. Son #2 said Cold Stone was better. Son #3 enjoyed his. The prices were reasonable for the beach. There was a line when we pulled up and when we left.

My dad Vacationed in Myrtle Beach back in the 50's. We were driving along highway 17 when suddenly he turned off the road and we were at Painter's. Place looked closed but a woman popped her head out and I got Banana Pudding ice Cream. *swoon* My dad commented that this is the first flavor other that chocolate and vanilla that he'd ever eaten there. I say any business that goes on for 50+ years successfully deserves a taste.

  • Marc S.

Walk up place. Had to try. It was ice cream. Yup, just like everyone else. Owner loves how popular he is with stars from the 70's and 80's too. Psssssssst...It's 2014...

The wife and I were on our way home when we both had the idea for some ice cream. We decided to stop in at Original Painters Homemade Ice Cream. My wife "needed" chocolate and I wanted to try three different HOMEMADE flavors. I went with butter pecan, banana pudding, and black cherry. All flavors were rich, creamy, and smooth. OPHIC's outside location is just the place for some ice cream. Two thumbs up and we will be back for more.

    (5)
  • Paul B.

Simply put, not great. We were attracted by the large crowds and "homemade ice cream" sign. Well, the crowds must be tourists and not locals. The ice cream was essentially tasteless and way overpriced. I had a hot fudge sundae that was completely uninspiring. If this is homemade ice cream, I would dispose of the recipe and start over. In short, find another place to satisfy your craving for a cone or sundae.

Delicious ice cream. We had for the first time this visit and went back every night we were there. We met the owner who was very friendly and personable. We had black cherry, choc chip cookie dough, mint choc chip and choc. We all loved it. As soon as we turned away my niece's ice cream fell off the cone. She started crying and the owner came out from behind the counter and gave her an ice cream in a cup with a cone on the side. We were very impressed at this very friendly gesture. How could we not go back every night after that.

    (5)
  • Katelyn B.

Overrated. Crowds are deceiving. Paper has more flavor than this "ice cream". No thanks.

  • Andrew A.

The parking lot was a bit chaotic but the ice cream was delicious. Was it the best in the US? I doubt it. But definitely good. The thing I enjoyed the most was the person who took our order. He was extremely friendly and joking. Made the experience worth while and more importantly made the price worth it. I honestly didn't feel like it was expensive comparatively speaking to the amount of ice cream you got. Definitely worth the stop.

    (4)
  • Jeff C.

Mediocre ice cream at best. We go every year simply for the nostalgia, but there are much better choices for ice cream. They're reasonably quick even with a crowd, but they lose a star for charging a credit card fee. When I'm buying $20 worth if ice cream, they can afford to eat the fee.

  • Ethan G.

We stopped here on a family vacation with 14 people and ordered this overpriced ice cream. My cousins ordered a mint chocolate milkshake and it was terrible. The milkshake was mostly milk. It had one scoop of ice cream in it at best. When my aunt took it back and asked for another ice cream the worker refused to give her another one. My uncle ended up taking it back and they reluctantly gave him a new one with only one scoop, almost half the cost of the milkshake. The ice cream is overpriced and mediocre at best. The service is terrible as well.

    (1)
  • Michelle A.

Just Ok ice cream. The flavors were short due to them closing up for the winter season soon. Also doesn't take credit cards so make sure to bring cash. Luckly we had a twenty on us when we went. Owner's teenage kids were hanging out front being annoying with their gossip and loud trucks. Wouldn't go out of my way to go here but its not bad.

    (3)
  • Linda E.

Excellent homemade ice cream. I particularly enjoyed the peach and banana walnut flavors. Portion sizes are generous and the texture and creaminess are mouth watering.

    (4)
  • Marc S.

If you want to pay by card at the N. Myrtle Beach location - call first. Sometimes it can be a month before they get their machine up once they open for the season. Awesome ice cream, though...

    (4)
  • Madisen M.

Less than friendly service that ruined the experience. Ice cream was definitely not homemade.

    (1)
  • Ishmael L.

Excellent service and delicious ice cream!! A little pricey, but I think it was worth it to get our fixin'!

    (4)
  • Travis W.

I have to agree with some as I don't understand the bad reviews for this place. After dinner while in Myrtle me and my family decided it was time for a cold treat. I'm not one to go to a chain or some simple place and Painters really fit the bill for homemade, fresh ice cream. I had the chocolate peanut butter chip waffle cone and was more than pleased about the taste and consistency. This place can get really packed and the seating as well as the parking can get messy and hard to find so be prepared to be patient. I was actually surprised though at how quickly our orders were ready considering the crowds.

    (4)
  • Tyler W.

I loved this. It reminded me of my favorite ice cream place ever, a little stand in Concord NH with incredible ice cream and lots of picnic tables for spending summer nights with family. I think the nostalgia of it all may have clouded my judgement, but whatever. It was hoppin when we arrived, but the line moved quickly and we waited less than 5 minutes between standing in line and getting our cones. I ordered fudge ripple, my sister ordered Oreo. Mine was really yummy, with creamy vanilla ice cream and rich hot fudge swirls. My sister was disappointed that there weren't more chunks of actual cookie in her Oreo ice cream, but I took a bite and liked the way the cookies had been blended smooth. FYI, not a ton of seating, particularly if you're dining with a crowd. Bottom line, I would have gone back every night if I wasn't such a sensible human.

For about the last 38yrs of Ice cream from Painter's does not make me know much about it,But we sure do like it. the owner and my sons have been friends since way back. It does not matter summer or winter when we get to the beach a cup or cone is going to be had I promise and several times that week or weekend. The picnic tables makes it nice to set around My wifes parent's started her when she was a kid so she's been eating that good Ice cream, or Turttle's or shakes for a long time. Never a long wait no matter how many people or there. Since they make their Ice Cream on location you know It's good. Take the family HAVE A CONE, you want regret It.

    (5)
  • Kristin S.

So this place may have history I thought the ice cream was really bland. Also thought was really expensive. Would rather go to the fun house down the street. Not worth the long lines.

    (2)
  • Bilal T.

Four people got ice cream for around $20, which I thought was a fair price! I got the butter pecan ice cream-- delicious! My five-year-old niece got cookie dough and she said it was the best ice cream she's ever had. Also, our cashier was the owner and he was very funny and made the simple process of paying an enjoyable experience!

    (5)
  • Seth K.

Other reviews are unfair. On the ice cream Painters is one of the best. The heath bar crunch and cookie dough are creamy and rich. No bitter artificial after taste. On the customer service, they need work - they're moderately grumpy for an ice cream parlor. The "no tastings after 7p" is a little harsh too, but warranted - even when you think there's no one after you, there will be. They get busy fast. But then I met Dominic, the guy who runs the place and hand makes the ice cream. Super nice guy and super tough job. It made me appreciate the ice cream that much more and that it's important to "go local" especially when faced with so many chains and artificial ice cream brands. Of all your choices in MB, this is a safe bet for your ice cream cravings. Expect a little impersonality at the window, but roll with it since they have plenty of love to give... It's just all in your cone, not in your face.

    (4)
  • Melissa D.

This place is AMAZING! the other mid to low star review people are nuts. The staff is SUPER. The ice cream is amazing! The waffle cones are to die for. I will ALWAYS go here for ice cream. It's a MUST when visiting Myrtle Beach. If there is a line, it's worth it!

    (5)
  • Judy K.

entirely over priced for what you get. 5 bucks gets you a single child like size scoop in the smallest Styrofoam cup I've ever seen....homemade ice cream, maybe, maybe not, I've had better. save your money go somewhere else!

    (2)
  • Kristin B.

Great place for homemade ice cream with wonderful service. This was our first visit and we made a late night (10:00) decision to get ice cream and we were not disappointed. We will definitely add this to our list of "must do" items for our annual trip to Myrtle Beach.
